In short the problem is not the Holy Spirit but it's people. The Gift of God promised by Jesus is with us - so lets walk in the Spirit. Of course there are flesh reactions - we are not all perfect in our following the cloud. The way in which some preach it maybe the reason that you have seen problems - get them in a good Bible teaching Jesus following God fearing Spirit led church. I know there is a lot of flaky stuff tought and believed out there so we are doing what we can- NOT GOT IT ALL BUT WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR.
About "drunk in the spirit" I believe that what we are seeing is the flesh reacting to something spiritual and the flesh cant cope so "manifestations occur. The source is determined by who gets the glory. I have seen them getting up and still praiseng God - I heard that Wesley testified to the same.
Don't knock toungeus from your own experience - go back to the word - paul says I speak in tonges more than you all. God bless you. Antony
NB - This is not from pastor Cho - I was just telling about what I saw in the church he leads.
Thanks for taking the trouble to read and reply. Love and peace to you. Antony

it's the "manifestations" that make me wonder about what I'm seeing... for I truly believe I, myself, have been gifted with "tongues" at the times I'm able to write effectively (which I do in prayer)... and which is mainly, but not always, poetry. This gift of "angelic tongues" and "prophesy" has been commented upon by those other Children of God many times to me. I do note, too, however, of one particular person, who is a holy person himself, who does not like what I write--I do not yet know what to make of this, and am asking the Lord to dlarify for me what this all means. It keeps me humble and balanced--very important attributes, I think. Don't you?
Pastor Cho--I am one of those who has this abundant life of joy, peace, and overflowing love from Christ of which you speak--yet I see problems, as you may note, with some things on this website. perhaps not with what is said, since they stay pretty strictly Biblically-oriented, but the implications of them, from which I've seen damage in a good number of people. Perhaps it is the way the Biblical passages are "interpreted." I am not an expert on how you do that, yourself, so I can't say it is going on in your Church; only that the problem IS going on in charismatic Churches of your same ilk--maybe you have found ways to ameliorate the problems I elucidated in my notes. People NEED this closeness with God--and however they manage to get it is wonderful! If it is a long-lasting, not a transient thing that is here today, and gone tomorrow (the LOVE of God takes care and feeding, as I am prone to say) I am ALL FOR IT and CAN believe it is a gift of the Holy Spirit--in whatever form it takes. The dangers or pitfalls of speaking in tongues in groups I warned about are real--and a product of the work of Satan--like all problems with organized religions, including the divisions within us. 1) competition for the gift of tongues is real and divisive in groups 2) people set themselves up to be "holier than thou" extremely easily in groups (the sin of "pride") causing much distress among the vulnerable 3) people not comfortable with displays of spirituality sometimes get pushed aside or actually cast out for non-participation 4) in order to "be part of the group" people will "ape" the gift (the competition again)
5) of what use is communication that is ununderstandable--what about the injunction that there needs to be someone there who can "interpret"? etc. etc. The other issue is when people are "drunk with the spirit", how does one know what spirit it is that one is being influenced by? Especially in light of the damage I am seeing being done to others. I have had these people come to me in distress with these questions over the years--that is why I am so concerned. Please feel free to write me with how you are addressing these kinds of problems, because I am truly interested, and do not wish to continue generalizing these problems to everyone, if this is not the case and only had to do with the many individuals I just happened to meet with on chance enoounters.
PS. I am both a spiritual director and have a history of having been a clinical psychiatric nurse for thirty years.
